Advent for All - 2026 Edition

The Christmas season often brings both tension and joy. There is the excitement of family, friends, presents, special traditions, Christmas carols, and the precious Scripture passages which remind us that God was born as a baby to save the world. But family relationships are not always what we wish they were, grief and loss become more poignant, the days feel scattered and rushed in a flurry of events, and we can end the season feeling hollow, resolving that next year will be different.
As we enter the 2026 holiday season, remember two things.
First, none of us is alone in these jumbled feelings of hope and heaviness. Throughout the history of the church, Advent is experienced as a season of waiting. In many places in the world, Advent is also a season of fasting, and the feasting only begins when Christmas arrives. We live in the joy of Jesus's first coming while continuing to long for his second; Advent is this paradox.
Second, each of us can strive to make this year's celebrations more meaningful. The best moments usually come when we slow down. This is where the 2026 CMI Advent guide comes in. Designed to inspire both young and old, each week is a feast of ideas, including Bible readings, music, poetry, art, handicrafts, nature activities, and more.
If you used our guide previously, you'll find old favorites and fresh inspiration mixed together in this 2026 edition. This year we're leaning into Advent and Christmas traditions across the global and historic church, including celebrations at Ethiopia's rock-hewn churches, the story of St. Nicholas, and the history of Simbang Gabi. In true Charlotte Mason style, we also keep these guides hands-on: you'll have opportunities to join the Christmas Bird count, make a Cloisonne Christmas ornament, and cook a St. Stephens Day Stew.
As you plan special moments and space for reflection for yourself and those around you this Advent and Christmas season, we hope our advent guide becomes your companion. Pick and choose your own plate (perhaps literally) to encourage your soul toward greater hope in Jesus this year.
We hope you'll join us in waiting for and celebrating God with us, and please share this guide (digitally or physically) with anyone who might enjoy it!
